I was out with friends the other night up in my old home town and ran into a bunch of guys from a local band out for drinks after their rehearsal. I know a couple of the guys pretty well (one's my brother-in-law and the drummer works at one of the drum shops in town where I've shopped for years)

After chatting for a while, I asked if any of the guys had scored Police tickets for the summer. That was when the drummer (I'll call him Douche Lips) started raving about what a shitty drummer Stewart is. He went on about how he's the most arrogant, least talented drummer with the worst time that he's ever seen or heard and went on to parody Stewart's octoban setup, etc.

According to D.L., Neil Peart is the reigning drum god on the planet. I agreed that Neil is technically amazing at what he does but that to me, he is mechanical and lacks warmth and feeling. I went on to argue that Stewart is inventive and original, citing the rhythms from Secret Journey, Reggatta de Blanc, One World, etc. but this guy would have none of it. I was losing my cool and decided to return to my friends at the bar rather than continue arguing with this mental midget.

All remained well for the last half hour or so until the bartender asked us to finish up and I returned to say goodnight to my brother-in-law. Drum Douche made one last comment about Stew and I lost it. Although I was outnumbered, I took that fuck face to the floor before regaining my composure and letting him back up. (I'll probably need to find a new place to shop now) I doubt it will do anything to change his mind about the man but I sure as hell felt better afterwards.

A sure sign that someone has no knowledge of REAL music is when they always judge a musician by technical mumbo jumbo. The minute I hear someone discount "feel" I'm gone....nothin to say to some moron who doesn't get..."energy".."vibe" or "feel". Neil Peart has great technique. Whoop te Doo? ...I think he's great but I don't even own one of his CD's...I want to hear "EXPLOSIVE DRUMS" !

Neil Peart's drumming certainly does NOT lack warmth and feeling.

That said, I dont think Neil is the mighty god of all drummers. His time these days is questionable.

Stewart's time is good when he wants it to be:

Not many drummers can play along to a sequencer like Synchronicty I and never lose the beat. It has to be machine-like.

There are a few drum musos over on StingUs who say the same thing. They have a holier-than-thou attitude and they seem to equate great drumming with sounding exactly like a drum machine. Yuck.

Thankfully, there are only a few. The majority LOVE Stewart and know that he's one of the greatest drummers in rock history. Unlike most drummers, Stewart's style are immediately recognizable.

He must be smoking crack!!!!...Neal Peart is not the "greatest drummer alive"..man so many drummers smoke Neal...Vinnie Colautia, Steve Smith, Chad Wackerman, Bill Bruford, and Terry Bozzio even Manu Katche. I would hate to take drum lessons from your brother in law...LMAO.

And he says Stewart is horrible...what the heck...he is the best all around drummer/composer. Has Neal ever scored a film or an opera?

Stewart Copeland is my favorite drummer on the planet...and I have been drumming professionaly for years.

My brother-in-law is actually the guitarist/frontman for the group. The drummer is just the other guy I knew well in the group. Or at least thought I knew well. I guess we never really discussed drum favorites when I was frequenting his shop through the years.

I had mixed feelings about starting this post as I didn't want to come across as some psycho ready to throw down at the slightest provocation. Especially since this occurred as I was defending the honor of my childhood hero.

No, I didn't draw blood and I stopped myself short of snapping his neck or breaking his nose, although it did flash through my mind quickly as I was taking him down.

I guess that drummer of that band you are talking about (Douche something...) should listen to music, and not just to 'banging drums', if he knows what that means...I guess he's just into bangin', that's his problem; he may do the best banging, but as to music culture I guess he got to learn something....and a lot...

That's the problem of so many musicians, they believe that is good just what they like (I know may jazz players thinking like that...ahahahah), but anyway the most important thing when you play an instrument, is listening to what the whole band plays (Iif I don't get wrong, Stewart also said that in a recent interview); this is what came to my head when I started playing when I was 4 r 5 years old (my first drumset)...lately I became a guitar player and a bassist player when I reached 16 or 17...

It's a worldwide opinion that Stewart drumming (like it or not) inspired so many musicians and made school...Vinnie Colaiuta (that I don't personally like but I consider one of the best around), theorised what Stewart did instictively... I guess that Duche guy should learn something from the music world...

I have to say that I have no idea about drumming, I just Love Stewart! However I do love the way he drums and over the last few years I have become more aware of his dumming and I listen out for it......
But woe betide ANYONE who slates SC! We could form a queue and kick DL's ass to the beat of a Police tune and SC drumming and then see what he says.......
