Sting: Obama best person to handle world's 'mess'

NEW YORK – Sting isn't a religious man, but he says President Barack Obama might be a divine answer to the world's problems.

"In many ways, he's sent from God," he joked in an interview, "because the world's a mess."

But Sting is serious in his belief that Obama is the best leader to navigate the world's problems. In an interview on Wednesday, the former Police frontman said that he spent some time with Obama and "found him to be very genuine, very present, clearly super-smart, and exactly what we need in the world."

"I can't think of anyone better qualified because of his background, his education, particularly in regard to Islam," he said.

Still, Sting acknowledged the president had a "difficult job" ahead of him.

The British singer, who released the seasonal album "On A Winter's Night" this week, said he's fascinated by American politics, Obama, and also by Obama's opponents on the right.

"It's aggressive and violent and full of fear," he said of the backlash against Obama. "They don't want change, they want things to feel the same because they feel safe there."

Sting, 58, said he's hopeful that the world's problems can be dealt with, but is frustrated that "we seem to be living in a currency of medieval ideas."

"My hope is that we can start talking about real issues and not caring about whether God cares about your hemline or your color," he said. "We are here to evolve as one family, and we can't be separate anymore."

So, Sting, it is a problem that we are "living in a currency of medieval ideas.".

Dude, have you listened to your last 2 CDs, full of medieval music? Maybe the world is just following your lead?

I'm with Animal:

Who died and made Sting (or any other celebrity, for that matter) an expert on what's best for the world? Yes, everyone has a right to his/her opinion, but. . . This is just a pet peeve of mine.

Joins the queue (BTW, never an Obama supporter: it just proved to me that a penis is the only needed attribute to become President in many Western nations).

...Maybe this is a statement in the hope of receiving a pre-emptive Nobel Prize too??

I'm kind of curious how Sting's comment (which the interviewer said was a joke) is any different than Stewart's recent comment:

"I worship Obama; I hope and pray he succeeds.”

Hyperbole. Very frequent in StewartsSpeak. Everyone prays for Obama to succeed, nobody wants this country to plummet further.

Excusing Stewart's comment as "hyperbole" is certainly convenient! (Especially when you don't like the comment.) It's a bit like religious groups picking and choosing what's "symbolic" and what's "literal" in the bible!

I'm well aware of Stewart's tendency to exaggerate; I've been a fan longer than I care to admit. But in this case I think he meant what he said. Especially when you look at the full quote:

"I voted for George Bush twice but not for George W. Now, I worship Obama; I hope and pray he succeeds."

I think it's a bit hypocritical to label Sting as an "idiot" for supporting Obama when Stewart obviously supports Obama, too. I'm curious what the reaction had been if Sting said he "worshipped" Obama...

Oh, but I do like the comment! I just never believed in Miracles. I know Stew comes from a GOP milieu and watches Fox News. Now THAT I don't like, but nobody is perfect. (Except Sting, of course... )
