Drummer Question..what type of brand do you play?

Postby TheEqualizer on 01 Aug 2007 20:38

Tama Starclassic Maple would certainly be the way to go.

Also, I am afraid to report that, after years of dedicated research, there are some problems beer cannot solve. That is why God invented brandy.
One thing about playing in the city though is Philly is now smoke free, nice to not have that shit on my drums or me.
Oh god- worst thing ever was how bad the wood absorbed that club smell of stale beer and cigarette smoke. Even worse was if it was a really late night coming home I'd leave them in the car too tired to unload until the next day, only to have the car be all smelly for a week.

You can wash your clothes and take a shower, can't exactly throw the drums in the tub.
I like the avatar Vince. The next time you see that SNL 'cowbell' skit watch right at the end of that part when Ferrell is tapping the cowbell in his face(who plays the singer?), they do that little fake 'fight' and I could swear Will Ferrell catches the singer in the face with his stick pretty hard.
Just watched it on Youtube. Sure looks like he gets Chris Parnell in the face! Nice catch MJ.

Another observation after watching it...was Fallon ever in a skit where he didn't lose character?! I mean, it was funny maybe once, but it seems like every skit he's losing it.

TAMA & PAISTE

Postby drummike on 02 Aug 2007 00:54

Thanks to SC and Bill Bruford, etc, Paiste is all that sounds good to me.

When I played rock, it was all Paiste Sound Formulas or 2002s and the drums were Pearl or Yamaha Recording series.

Now that I only play jazz, it's Paiste Traditionals plus a 2002 flatride and a Tama Stagestar bebop kit with a 5x14 Rockstar snare.

Most drums can produce a good sound if the heads are good and tuned well, but there's not much you can do with bad cymbals. Save your money and buy something good - Paiste Signatures, 2002s, Traditionals, and Dark Energies. All good stuff.

I have several kits. Started out on a 1969 Sonor "Swinger." It was a budget kit for those too poor to afford their good stuff. Well, ya know what? In my opinion, it was just as good, if not better! I still have it. Never getting rid of that one. Played it for 14 years.

In '92, I got a 5-piece Tama Rockstar because I couldn't afford anything better AND it was purple AND Stewart plays Tama. Great kit, great sound, a real workhorse, and surprisingly light in weight!

In '99, my wife bought me my current kit - a Sonor Designer series in Stain Black with thin maple shells. I affectionally refer to it as "The Batmobile" because everything about it is so over-the-top. Nothing they do from here on out will ever top it. Even their current "SQ2" series is really just a re-hash.

Which is why the NEXT kit will most likely be Starclassic Bubinga. I LOVE low end and these drums seem to have just what I'm looking for. I just have to decide on the finish. I've got plenty of time to do that, though since it doesn't look like I'll be winning the lottery anytime soon.

Oh yeah - cymbals. I've played all models from the "Big 3" but I always come back to my K Zildjians. I just love that sound. Very dark and organic with loads of depth.

A 5 piece Brady with a 22" x 20" kick. Brady are hand made out of West Australian Jarrah... their 12"x7" block snares (carved out of a single piece of timber) are coveted around the world.
Sabian and Paiste cymbals with a Zildjen FX splashy thing.
A never to be repeated kit, and never to be parted with.

Nice.

Block snare sounds really interesting, congrats on such a unique kit.

I assume a really nice "warm" sound?.

They sound beautiful...woodgrain finish?

Cheers.

BB.
they should be wood grain however the guy that had them custom made was a bit of a looney and decided they should be black... it's an aussie rock thing, I'm afraid. (for all those antipodeans - it is the kit that The Screaming Jets recorded "Better" on, and the stratospheric contract they signed with RooArt paid for them.... I picked it up second hand from billy hydes cause Brad Heaney was totally destitute and needed the money..... not that I regularly take advantage of the psychiatrically unbalanced, but a unrepeatable bargain for an unrepeatable musical instrument is not to be missed, in my book)
Jarrah actually has some sharper attack tones because it is quite dense, but it's body and decay is all deep, sweet and woody.
I love my kit. It's really unique attribute is that it is so loud that you must concentrate on expression in the smallest increments, lest you over take the front of house. :D

What's the problem here? :p

Sounds like a sweeeeet kit- would love to see pics and hear some sound clips! As much as I LOVE the SC signature snare, there's definitely times where I really enjoy switching to the Starclassic Maple- wood snares sound so beautiful.

I *knew* I'd miss a good thread if I was away for more that one day. I love the pride of drummers in their sets....my turn!

I have a couple kits...a set of 1972 Ludwig Maple Classics for the studio - 9x13, 16x16, & 14x22 in silver sparkle, and a set of new Ludwig Maple Classics for the road - 9x13, 16x16, 16x22 also in silver sparkle. For snares, I have a Ludwig 5x14 Satinwood, a Pearl 6-1/2x14 free floating brass, a Pearl 5x14 sensitone steel, and an early 70's 4x13 Ludwig snare which needs some work.

I'm a Zildjian dude, with a 20" K ride, 20" K custom dark ride, 19" A custom crash, 18" K dark crash, 17" K dark crash, 16" A custom projection crash, 14" new beat hats, and some crusty old 80's 14" rock hats.

CAN YOU FEEL THE PRIDE?!?

Don't have a kit currently, but am EYEING one. Something I can bash and get my frustrations out on. Of course the dream would be Stewarts kit...OMG She is a gorgeous thing of beauty. Mighty expensive.

Dunnoh, for now maybe just I know forgive me for saying this..but mind you my living situation is an apartment, need to mind my neighbors. An electronic kit until I can get a Real one. UGH. Good for practice anyhow.

Definitely a Tama for sure when I get a real one. With Paiste Cymbals I already have 2 pair of SC Vater Sticks...got a good start at least.
