Fiction Plane: Love 'em or hate 'em?

Postby dontboxmein on 16 Jul 2007 16:36

I know 4 bands right now that are better the FP and can they get a label deal hell no!!! I rest my case.

The business has changed it's all in who you know and if their is a pay out.

Hell, I can't stand Maxeen but even they are better than FP...

Flemming and John they were an incredible band here in Nashville and they even lost a deal.
and if sometimes i can't seem to talk you know this blackborad lacks a piece of chalk

I love Fiction Plane. They actually have been around for a long time now.

I saw them back in 2003 when they were on tour with "lifehouse" at a local festival and Joe would have no mention of the fact that he was Sting's son. He tried it without any help or recognition of who he is (as much as it is humanly possible to keep that fact out of the press). He did work hard. I met him and he was selling his own merchandise, setting up and taking down his own equipment. Running around in the festival grounds with a box of cds to sell.

Yes, there are better bands. And there are plenty of popular bands that AREN'T as good as Fiction Plane, either. But they have the right "image" to sell.

It's all subjective anyway, isn't it? If you have an emotional response to them, if their music moves you, then that is what's key. If you don't get anything from their music, then that's fine, too. There's plenty of room out there for all kinds of bands and their fans.

And what's the big deal about cussing? Isn't that rock n roll? It ain't supposed to be pretty.
What do I know I am a professional musician ...the songs were very weak.
But today we like mediocre bands and I will say it again if Joe was not Sting's son these guys would not have label interests.
Did you ever realize that hairdressers really have a fucked up hairdo most of the time?

Well, I'd be the first to argue that the music industry is really screwed up right now. I know a billion good Nashville bands myself (Dynamites, anyone?) that will also never get major radio airplay. Meanwhile we're subjected to the same overproduced, soulless crap on every station. It only gets played if the lead singer has good looks and no brain, usually. (I do realize there are exceptions to this rule, but there are too few.)

I've posted this a million times on here, but if there were any justice in this world, people would be asking "Britney Spears who?" and Neko Case would rule the world. However, life ain't fair.

Also, the system's too rife with payola and with overcaution, if you ask me. A lot of really greedy execs ruined things for everyone. And they wonder why downloading is such a problem and CD sales are down.

Thank God for the Internet. No wonder corporate America's trying to take that away too. (www.savetheinternet.com for more info)

I remember a time when a band could be kick ass good and have a hot lead singer....Ahem.

Scariest bit is tuning into the radio and hearing the same tired ole cr*p over and over and over. I have strong suspicions all the stations are owned by the same corporation feeding the same looped tape over and over. :P

And what on earth happened in the 90s with all that whining?? Honestly! Rock n Roll was never about whining ~ "I'm like a rat in a cage???" :?:

I liked a lot of 3 Doors Down's stuff, but their most popular song was "I'm a Loser".....what in the world? I mean in the 80s it was all about kickin' *ss and definitely standing up for yourself. What gives??
Life is but a game, so have a blast on the playground!

Here are my comments from the thread we jacked....this one is before Dive's comments which start the thread we're currently in:

I have to agree with dontboxmein on this one....sorry to say. I really *wanted* to like FP....I even went and bought their album thinking that I just needed to listen to their stuff a dozen times and it'd grow on me, but I'm going to be selling that CD I'm afraid. They're fine and capable musicians, but dontboxmein nailed about the songwriting....it's very one-dimentional. Frankly, I'm rather shocked considering whose loins he sprung from....

And after her comments I posted the following:

have nothing but the utmost respect for Joe especially given the fact that he has gone out of his way to get his band where it is on it's own merits....aside from this current tour. I agree, agree, agree on everything you said. It is clear that FP is a band, and not a couple guys supporting Joe. As I said before, they are all extremely competent musicians I just can't get into the songwriting....it's all to plain for *my* tastes, that's all.

It's not like I didn't try either....I thought they were rather bland in concert, yet I *still* bought their album and listened to it a good dozen times hoping it would grow on me.....it didn't.

As for music growing on you.....there would be a great many wonderful artists I would've thrown to the wayside if I didn't give their music more than one chance. In my book, it ain't all about the catchy single....I'm an album guy.

Honestly, Haven't seen em. I know I know. Bad cp, but I was just having too much fun tailgating in Miami, then at dinner with kids & wife before Tampa. Not my fault they cancelled at Bonnaroo! :(
Maybe that environment, for me, wasn't the best to judge them. I was too much on high-anticipation mode for the Police. I'd need to get a vibe for them on their own. But so far, I give them a solid C+. No hate. But no love.
for me daweasel said it spot on the money. Don't have a bad thing to say about them really, and would defer to Dive, whom I think has great taste in general.

I totally missed them at Staples(there was free alcohol in the VIP room) and was too amped to the FOOS and Stew at Dodger. But, if someone put their album on, I wouldn't turn it off and I'd give em the time of day- which actually takes a lot these days.

BTW, I LOVE da avatar daweasel- it's sooooo creative.
there are a bunch of good ones, but this is so SC.Net!
