Incredible Tampa Show

Incredible Tampa Show

Postby Voices Inside My Head? on 12 Jul 2007 15:44

Despite some official reviews of earlier shows, I thought last night's Tampa show was incredible. They sounded great! They looked like they were having a great time on stage together. I hadn't heard much about this except the virtual ticket video, but Stewart has some set up. The gong along with the xylophone and various wind chimes allowed him more fun than than the other two. So, they rearranged a few songs' melodies. I thought that De Do Do Do was great, and Don't Stand So Close sounded like a compromise between the standard Police version and how Sting usually plays it. Sting's voice was on last night, as were Andy's numerous solos and Stewart making full use of his drums. The crowd was really into it, especially the call outs. Screw most of the critics, and those complaining about the prices, an unbelievable show from a band that is playing amazingly together. Every Little Thing and Wrapped are somewhat different due to lack of keyboards, but after the start, were done well. Well worth 20+ years of waiting. My 38 year old self was even carded tonight for my beer.

I noticed that thepolice.com had yet to post a review of the show. Here is one from the local St. Pete Times. I don't like the need to preach band tension, but enjoy the appreciation of the songs.

Great to hear everyone's enjoying the tour. I loved every minute of the 3 shows I attended. It still stuns me that they're playing together. It is hard not to complain about the ticket prices. I spent so much money on those 3 shows, but truth be told, push come to shove I would have spent a lot more if I had to. After 23 years, there was no way I was going to miss this tour.

I promise this will be my last post for a while. I just figured it would interest some that haven't already searched for reviews. Here is one from the Orlando Sentinel.

I think it's nearly a 100% siutation that people who had been previously apprehensive based on reviews have come back from the show thy attended to say that it was very far above their expectations... even when they still had high expectations.

Glad it was fun, Voices. :)

The Police: Defying (or better yet, ignoring) the critics, surpassing expectations, kicking ass nightly. This tour is turning out to be one of the great treats of my existence! I envy you multiple-show goers......By the way, in the review above, the guy from the St. Petersburg Times says "The three guys don't like each other that much." I do not believe it. I'm convinced there's no way in hell they would have reunited if they didn't "like" each other. Tension? Yes. Three dudes on stage with nowhere to hide? Yes. Pressure from all directions? Yes. They don't "like" each other? No way.

This only goes to prove that critics can be injurious to one's health!

Responding again to the reports that they don't like each other, how many have said so before taking in a show. I don't think the facial expressions and camaraderie were faked. There were glances among them throughout the show. At several points, seeing Stewart smiling perched up at his kit, his face seemed to be saying, "I've finally gotten my band back" If you are a true fan, you are going to the shows anyway. If you are going, because it is the popular thing to do, also go anyway, because you will be blown away. It's amazing how many half empty glass reviewers are out there. It is o.k. to occasionally write a good review! That cry wolf attitude has caused me to ignore anything they say.

Oh, and lastly, thanks for the welcome, Dirty Martini.

  Oh, man, I guess the thing is I WANT them to like each other! I'll bet most critics don't understand that music doesn't just magically appear out of Happyland. By the way, in every single article I've read about this tour that features quotes from the lads, the operative word is always "love" regarding the other players. Anyone who's been in any kind of long-term relationship knows that at some point, the honeymoon is over. My glass is half-full! Let's now join hands for a chorus of "Kumbaya"........
