Copeland = New Age music?

Copeland = New Age music?

Postby TheEqualizer on 12 Jul 2007 06:03

I was looking at my iTunes and noticed something weird about Copeland. You know how iTunes will list artist, title, album, etc. Well, it also lists the genre of music. The soundtracks for Rumblefish, Wall Street, and Talk Radio as well as Orchestralli are all classified as New Age. New Age??!? I then checked Andy Summers' Mysterious Barricades, which I think is clearly the most New Agey thing he has done and even that is at least classified as jazz. Other iTunes classifications: Summers/Fripp - Rock; The Rhythamatist - Rock; Animal Logic - jazz; Oysterhead - Rock.

Who does these classifications?

Fuck New Age: Steven Halpern is New Age!
I think the best definition of SC music is by the Man himself: "knotty". Elaborated, unpredictable, unique. There is an ebullient energy, but also a vagrant, disquiet feeling to it.
I never heard anything like it. 8)

Equalizer, can I tell you a "secret"? I work as a contractor for one big software company.
Marketing people sell music, or computer, or tomatoes, like the same thang: Product. They have no freaking idea. Better stop here. I would not like to be identified, but I do a heck of a good job because I know fucking music, and I have for a long time!

Kalypso, remember: PUBLIC board. If you want to be safe, take out that identifying word.

Genre-wise, people don't have a clue. Record stores have been making similar mistakes forever. As do book stores, as do . . . Some stuff is hard to categorize. And some stuff isn't, but people are stupid.

DM,

Thank you for the advice. Can you edit a post when it has already, well, been posted? Or delete it?

This forum works a little differently from others, so I would be thankful if you could tell me how.
TIA

K

It's the same with Ruckus, or even dare I say the allknowing? All Music Guide

For too long these so called expert texperts have tried to tell real Music fans what it is
Like Tom Petty sang once- the A and R man said 'I don't hear a single'

That is why the state of popular music today is so worthless and cookie cutter crapola

Having said my peace, I was particularly heartened by Live Earth, and even our teenage son and his friends music taste
I think many young people today our realizing that Corporate Music is out to make a buck and they are so disenchanted with the Music Machine threatening to come after all the college and teens for downloading that they are sayin F-it,
we'll play and listen to whatever the hell we want!

I think Stewart knew this back in the day and could probably conceive of a better musical reality where some more rich diverse musical playing gets back into the mix

Cuz we are all One World- and we all got a voice and chance to shine

Cheers!

p.s. I know they got their own sites, but my inspirations, besides the Police of course,
on Live Earth were the Foo Fighters- Dave Grohl is the Man!
RHCP- they are so talented
John Butler Trio, Crowded House, Missy Higgins, Paul Kelly and the whole Aussie scene really
and John Mayer- who loves the Music, and who speaks what he feels freely- that's the true American spirit!
