I recently read a collection of investigative journalism called 'Tell me no Lies', edited by John Pilger. Excellent book, though rather left-wing naturally so be warned if that's not your cup of tea...
In it is an article on the leader of the miners' strikes in England, Arthur Scargill. In the early 90s, Scargill was made the target of a big publicity campaign, claiming he had misused the miners' money to pay his own debts etc; these accusations were later found to be all unfounded.
Before the smear campaign begun, Scargill was tipped off about it beforehand by none other than Miles Copeland (Jr? I mean the Dad who had called Scargill and told him he did not approve of his policies, but neither did he approve of the coming smear campaign against him either.
This is a rather obscure story isn't it?
