Anyone else remember this?

Anyone else remember this?

Postby Hannaha on 20 Jun 2007 20:04

This memory suddenly popped into my head today for no apparent reason. In the 80's there was an ad on british TV for a deodorant, Right Guard I think, that used 'Don't Stand So Close To Me' as its jingle. At High School it was common place for anyone who was a bit *fragrant* to have this song sung to them in the corridors, classrooms and playgrounds of Britain.

Yeah I remember it.. I think Sting even refers to the advert in the Gateshead Concert in 1982. Just before telling the Daily Mail to eff off...

I think they (Sure? or Right Guard?) never asked his permission and he got a bit pissed off with them to say the least.

To be honest, and I can't comment on your friends.. but none of mine actually smelt that bad...

.... ( remembers slowly... but they did used to sing it to me.. the b*stards - how could they do this to me???? )

In fact, Sting was so pissed off about it that he took Virgin Music to court to get back his song catalogue eventually. Sting had signed off 50 % of his royalties in that "Last Exit" publishing deal which Carol Wilson had drawn up in 1977.

The case ended in a settlement (well, thanks to Michael Jackson, we all know exactly what that is:-)) with Sting getting back his copyright on his songs in 1988 (eventually) and a lump sum paid by Virgin to Sting in 1982.

Since 1988 then, Sting had his copyrights administered by EMI in a 75/25 deal which is quite ok!

Enough court music history for now!;-)

I must see the infamous DoubleMint ad before I die. I must.

Oh, and maybe the one where Sting grabs Ms. Lumley's assets.
