The only thing that keep me interested in the Police… is the approach
of it’s founding member Stewart Copeland. Stewart had the idea of a
trio inspired by the ‘Jimmy Hendrix Experience’, he would call ‘Police’
or ‘the Copeland’s Police’, before he even met Gordon Sumner, better
known as ‘Sting’.
When Sting left the band, each member went on his own direction, doing
fully knew work. Except for Sting, who did a solo career, but caring with
him and for himself, the heritage of the Police. Sting was still playing the
Police songs during all the lapse of time between 1984 and 2007.
Henry Padonvani became an excellent guitarist with a link Wray style.
Andy Summers did very elaborated instrumental music on guitar.
Stewart Copeland explored film scoring, ethnic sounds, in a field clearly
marked by the label “Anti Pop” (title of a project with his other trio
Oyserhead).
In the beginning, the police was innovative. Now, I hope that after the big
event of getting the trio together, they will slightly think about innovation
again. I hop it’s not too conformable to entertain, when doing new songs
supposes some risks. From this point of view, Stewart seems to be the
only instigator possible. As he always was.
If Stewart gives the impulse, the other two guys will work out a new
universe. Even if it’s the last tour ever : at the age of mp3 compressed
and archived immediately available sound, it will be material for all
the coming years. It’s worth to leave a good souvenir.
I know the challenge is big, because a ‘good souvenir’ is precisely what
was preserved until now.
