Can anyone shed light on...

Can anyone shed light on...

Can anyone shed light on this? A week or so ago one of the local radio stations here in Denver mentioned something that the Police had recorded some preliminary new material and taken it to the record company, (I assume A&M or subsidiary?) but that the company turned it down and told them to try again. They said they were unhappy with it because it sounded like a weak spin off of "new age sting songs" ... anyone know anything about this?

As far as I know this story is true, the record company was not happy
with the recording result.

Come on! Which company would refuse new Police recordings after a sold out tour?
By the way, this story has already been discussed there a month ago, and if I remember well, it seems untrue.

As far as I know, this story came out months ago (like back after the initial Vancouver rehearsals) and is about as believable as any of the other trashrag stories about the band these days--that is, not at all. Someone just keeps "rediscovering" the story and running with it.

It's actually probably a rehash/rewrite of a story that suggested that the whole reason Sting decided to go with the reunion was he had an album worth of material recorded after the Broken Music tour that was turned down because the record company didn't like the sound of it. (So, therefore, he would reconvene the Police to record the album instead).

I'm basically believing nothing I read in the papers or hear gossiped about until it comes from the guys directly (and isn't misquoted  )

as far as i know, andy was quoted as saying that they have a couple new songs and that there is a possibility of a new album and of course then a new tour after that, but that's all i've read about it. i think it was an article on the police fan site.

This was a month or two ago. The NY Daily News gossip column ran the aforementioned story, claiming the Police could not get a record deal.
Soon after, a Fox News gossip column on the web ran a story that contradicted it, quoting someone at A&M saying "the Police always have been and always will be signed to A&M" and "there is no new material that we know of". The official website later posted an official confirmation of the latter story.

That all may have been precipitated by Andy's comments, which would mean he and Stewart are now 1-1 for causing a minor media firestorm with their public statements.

Thanks for all your input everyone... As for the story being old news- it doesn't surprise me that some of the Denver radio stations are jsut recently getting wind of it... Definitely isn't New York, London or LA here... :D

...and Andy now says in the Rolling Stone interview that there is NO new material yet:

"I think at one point Sting was going to write a couple of songs, but he hasn't so far....Sting is not the kind of guy who wants to be pushed into anthing. I am with him on that point."

So what's the real story? Who knows. I think--just like with the initial tour announcement--nothing is (supposed to be) confirmed until the time is declared right for an official statement. Until then it's nothing but rumors and speculation (and maybe statements made too soon that then have to be denied until a specific time...)

And lots of free (though, muchly misaligned) publicity and potential hype in the meantime.

New Guitar Player Magazine: Andy says they have already working on 2 new songs, and if all goes well with this tour the obvious thing to do is record a new CD and tour behind that.

New Rolling Stone: Andy says there is no new materiial just yet

New Drums Magazine (Stewart On Cover): Stewart says that they have not been playing any new material and says anything new coming to the group would have to come from Sting first.

Its all so early even the band don't know. As far as the record company turning down new Police recordings, keep this in mind: They released a CD of LUTE MUSIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They will release anything given to them.....ANYTHING!!

I agree with you there secretjourney...
Find it hard to believe anything, even hypothetical, rumored or imaginary recordings, would be turned down at this point..

I was going to say the exact same thing but I know there are several people on here who really like the Lute CD. In fact, I wonder if he might break the Lute out during the Unplugged show.
