I understand what you're saying, W&S. I think sockii and I (if I may presume, sockii) just feel that more import lies on the rhythm than on the melody for audience interaction/comfort.

However, you are absolutely right about intensity conveyed in a particular sound/tone. Without that lower opening verse, DSSCTM loses a great deal of its ominousness and creepiness, and like you said, without the higher part in contrast, it loses that sense of frustration. Totally with you. I think we just differ on emphasis.

Although, has Sting EVER done the opening verse in the lower register live? I can only remember live recordings in which he jumps right into the higher notes (which I didn't love back in the day either).
Dramatic highlights & a unique musical cosmos. Guaranteed.

He's basically singing the low part the whole time on the new version, but they bumped up the key a little. I did some quick analysis, posted here:

As it turns out they changed the key on a number of songs, which is undoubtedly the reason why Sting's vocals are not quite the same. That suggests a conscious decision to save his voice, which is understandable if it's absolutely necessary, but I'm not sure it is.

That's right -- thanks, W&S. I haven't listened to a lot of the boots yet, and the sounds in my brain are starting to conflate.
