I understand what you're saying, W&S. I think sockii and I (if I may presume, sockii) just feel that more import lies on the rhythm than on the melody for audience interaction/comfort.
However, you are absolutely right about intensity conveyed in a particular sound/tone. Without that lower opening verse, DSSCTM loses a great deal of its ominousness and creepiness, and like you said, without the higher part in contrast, it loses that sense of frustration. Totally with you. I think we just differ on emphasis.
Although, has Sting EVER done the opening verse in the lower register live? I can only remember live recordings in which he jumps right into the higher notes (which I didn't love back in the day either).
