"I just want to play my drums" sc

"you've changed" sting

"i have changed" sc

(whisky go gos circa (february)

Quote from interview below (circa april)

"SC: That's good, I never heard that, actually! But Sting has been working with professionals, and they don't do that. They look to the boss for specific direction. It's his responsibility to tell them what to play, every bar. And when we first got back together, he was in that role, of telling us what to play, every bar. And I was going, "Shut the f**k up and play your bass! We'll figure it out. I never think about what I'm playing. I don't listen to myself, I listen to you, and whatever you play, I'll follow." This is something we're working out. We have our screaming matches, but with a twinkle in the eye."

At the press conference i thought stewart had accepted that sting was the guy who was going to arrange the music and stewart would just be happy in his limited capacity to play drums. Has stewart gone back on his comments at the whisky go go. Discuss?

As we're all wont to do because the tour is still a month away from happening (haven't checked GSC's countdown yet so I'm estimating) I think you're overanalyzing this - dissecting every word :) . They are all too hard headed and good to do this any one person's way. It was, is and always will be the dynamic between the three of them that creates the sound. You can't take one away and have the Police (this is true of the Police perhaps more than any other rock band). And of course they've been doing it their respective ways for over 20 years now so there's going to be some friction but it's the friction that makes them work. It won't be like 1978, it won't be like 1983, it won't be like solo Sting, it won't be like solo Andy and it won't be like solo/Oysterhead Stewart. It'll be a combination of all those things and it will be great. Can't hardly wait.

Well said Nathan. I hope it's not like anything we've seen them do before.

As to SC's comments. I think it's one thing to "follow the leader," which he eludes to by saying "I listen to you, and whatever you play, I'll follow" but it's entirely another to turn complete submissive to another artist's wishes. Part of the dynamic of being in a band is the give and take, which Sting really hasn't had a lot of in the past 20 something years. All in all, things sound amicable among them and they are working together, which is great. When the communication stops that's when problems arise.

I think actually it's saying the same thing in some ways. When he said "follow Sting's lead", he was talking about the same thing he said in the later quote--listening to each other, playing it by ear. He also said after the exchange you quoted, "you've changed, Stewart"..."He hasn't!" (referring to Sting). Shortly thereafter, he called him "Dear Leader". In other words, Stew was demonstrating in his comments the approach that he hopes to influence Sting to take...as opposed to trying to make everything perfect.

Anyway, all in here, is always changing, such is life. But is better that the change brings also more wisdom to play music...

Yeah, "I just want to play my drums" doesn't mean "thank you, sir, may I have another."

BTW, love the avatar, Mardee. Points to Grey Stewart!
Dramatic highlights & a unique musical cosmos. Guaranteed.

Thanks DM, but real credit goes to Sockii, it's originally one from her site. I just added the "Thwack!" to go hand in hand with "...for you are crunchy, and sound good thwacked with a stick!"
