Rolling Stones & The Who are classic rock but not Police

Postby georgygirl on 24 Mar 2007 05:24

Anyway, for me The Police still being mainly a rock band.

My point of view, or my two cents like you said...

You could use the term "fusion" in a general sense, but it has a specific meaning as a genre--jazz/rock fusion. The Police don't fit into that category.

I would call their "style" a combination of punk, reggae (and other forms of "world music"), funk, and progressive rock (bands like Yes, Rush, King Crimson). Their primary influence is definitely reggae. The vast majority of their songs (until Synchronicity) had some sort of reggae element to them, particularly in Sting's bass parts and singing.

Nathan, you really think there's no more punk music? Can't quite say I agree. Interesting theory, though...
THE POLICE have been very difficult to categorize. Given the variety of influences THE POLICE have incorporated into their music. Reggae, Punk, Funk, Rock, Ska, Pop, Calypso,..... Do I need to go on. THE POLICE surely started out as a PUNK band but as mentioned they eclipsed that due to their versatility and playing ability.
Don't forget they also fussioned chords and rythms from "Tango" in "Roxanne", arabic chords and sounds in "Behind my Camel", "Mother", "Bombs Away", USA Country music on "Canary in a Coalmine", Jazz in "Murder by numbers", etc... THE POLICE fussioned with success diverse styles of music and some world music that any band used before... all packaged into their unique style well-known as THE POLICE sound... that's why, they are superbs musicians than the average of their generation

Divemistress,
Nah, I think there's plenty of punk music around. The Exploding Hearts, The Briefs, Me First and the Gimme Gimme's are a few of my favorites from the last few years. Really, I just wanted to use that Chrissie Hynde quote somewhere. :) And in a really long-winded way I was trying to say that the labels all come after the fact anyway and from someone other than the bands (it's always those dang marketers - like Ric Ocasek said about new wave:"they put a tie on punk").

And how cool is it that the Police and the Who are both touring in 2007? I don't care what they call 'em, in the end it's all rock n'roll to me.
