ANDY & GUSTAVO CERATI- Great Report - THE POLICE TRIBUTE

Postby Jose on 19 Mar 2007 04:36

This is an amazing report about the making of "Traeme la noche" (Bring on the night" the spanish version of THE POLICE tribute album "Outlando's D'Americas".

In the story it mentioned Cerati ( a great rock star from Argentina) met Stewart Copeland, who was interested in his work and told some jokes about drummers, he excused to not be in the studio, cause a day before had a contract to made two soundtracks. Cerati had a good chemestry with Stewart and then with Andy.

A day after Cerati met Vinnie Collaiuta (who replaced Stewart) and Andy Summers, Gustavo Cerati remember the day he saw for the very first time "THE POLICE" in Argentina at the inauguration of "Disco New York" in Buenos Aires December 1980, and how he was well impressed by The Police (some years passed and Cerati organized his own successfull rock band called "Soda Stereo" by the way a rock trio band - that nowadays was disbanded. )

Andy mentioned how he was well-known by argentinian press as "THE POLICE who kick off a Cop", ( Andy summers defended a female fan who suffered a bad treat by an argentinian cop... that act risked Andy to be in jail...) Cerati says he knows who was that girl, she is well-known as : "Andromeda". Cerati, dismitified some rumours that tolds him about Andy as a perfectionist and difficult musician, saying that Andy was a very greatfull man who was dispossed and free to be directed by the ideas of the new version of "Bring on the night" (Traeme la noche) who was cose by Miles Copeland to be the first track of the tribute album ( by the way Number One into the songs rankings of Chile) . Also Vinnie, Andy and Producer Ingieneer was well impressed by the musical skills and voice of Gustavo Cerati.

Included some pics in the studio... By the way is in spanish.

Soda Stereo was an excelent band. I didn´t know it was influenced by The Police.

People here in Monterrey still remember its production.

And Gustavo Ceratti is also well know here!

Thank you very much José to share this information.

Yeah it was influenced by The Police, in their two first albums also used Ska and reggae guitar for their songs, is a trio band, and songs like "Cuando pase el temblor" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hao8-5jR ... ed&search= has really hard reminicenses of "Walking on the moon"... and lot of other songs...

I mean isn't a POLICE clon band as G.I.T., but was inspired by THE POLICE...

Search "Gustavo Cerati's Homepage" and in his biography he mentioned he was impressed by THE POLICE concert in Argentina 1980 ( as he mentioned to Andy) and how he build his band "Soda Stereo" with his university and band friends mates "Zeta" Bossio and drummer Charlie Alberti with whom swap POLICE albums.

Do you need more evidences?

Regards,

Jose ;)

WOW.

No, in fact I don't need any evidences, just thinking when I heared Soda's production, I never perceived Police's influences. But maybe is because it was not a clon like Mana when it was called Sombrero Verde, that sounded exactly like The Police's music.

This is another evidence: "Soda Stereo" drummer "Charlie Alberti" respond ( in an interview to "Soda Stereo" in Mexican TV) that the best influence and whom was very impressed on drums was STEWART COPELAND!!!

I remember a peruvian documentary about "Soda Stereo" and all what the band members responds is the same close of what THE POLICE memebers respond on press interviews, then you will see the disband of Soda Stereo, Gustavo Cerati solo work, and perhaps in a couple of years you could see the resurrection of SODA STEREO like THE POLICE... ahhh and the ages of Soda Stereo Members when they start as a band was close than the ages of what THE POLICE members started as a rock band.

This what Charlie Alberti talks about their inspiration and impression of STEWART COPELAND:

PS: What about "Mana" in Mexico? ;)

Thank you for the link José.

Cool evidence!

And for this:
perhaps in a couple of years you could see the resurrection of SODA STEREO like THE POLICE
Awesome prediction.

This is another prove of THE POLICE influences on "Soda Stereo" in words of "Gustavo Cerati":

These are the lyrics wrote by Gustavo Cerati of the spanish version of "Bring on the night":
