OT(ish?) Got My First Drum Set!

Postby Soundragon on 13 Nov 2011 03:42

Today I got my first drum set - for $30! It came with a snare, three toms, the bass, a hi-hat stand (which needs a little TLC) and it's in excellent condition! (And it's a Royce, by the way.)

Got to play with it a bit and it sounds excellent! Maybe now I can save up and get a Blue Bell Ride or Stewart Snare.

It's been my dream to drum for a while now, wish me luck as I start experimenting!

Congrats!

But be forewarned; you will lose hours very easily now :)

Post pics when you can.

Have fun!
I don't wanna work, I just wanna bang on the drums all day.

It was previously in the seller's garage since they had gotten a new set, so it needs a little cleaning. After that I'll snag some pics & share 'em. :)

Now all I gotta get is at LEAST one cymbal and a hi-hat (bottom & top). But my budget really only permits ~$50. (For each, not for all.) Any suggestions? I tried looking some up on EBay and Craigslist and I found some. Just not sure if their quality is good enough.

You've really got to experiment with cymbals in person. Go to a music store and check out some of Zildjian's ZBT or ZHT cymbals. These are decent sounding and kind to thin wallets. They are also available in prepackaged sets, which seems to be what you need.

I'll be sharing some soon (got to do a bit more polishing!), but I must warn you - I don't have an actual drum throne and the only chair we could find that'd really work is a wire frame chair. Doesn't look so hot but it does the trick. :p

@zilboy: Thanks for the advice! I've already been drumming for my youth group, maybe I could look the cymbals they've got up on EBay as well? They're pretty flashy though, wouldn't be surprised if they were pricy. :p

Hey, my first drum kit had only bass, rack tom, and hi-hat. I had to add the snare I already owned and I used my Dad's revolving desk chair for a throne!

You can go to the Zildjian website and check out soundfiles of the ZBT, ZXT and ZHT cymbals. Don't buy anything on eBay unless they provide a soundfile! Even sheet bronze cymbals sound a bit different from one another.

Quick update:

Thanks to my new job it looks like I'll be able to complete my set pretty quickly and easily! I ordered a pair of Paiste Alpha hi-hats this morning, and I hope to get two crash cymbals in about a month or so.

Pictures coming as soon as I get the hi-hat ready... and as soon as I find my camera.

Not to double post (which I am usually against), but...

As promised, here's some snags of my chariot! Please excuse any remaining rust/dirt, I'm still working on cleanup duty!

"Overhead" Shot
Notice the shiny new Copeland signature sticks. Those just came in today, I'll be framing up my old pair since they were my very first. I'll probably share pics of that later.

Forward Shot
If you'll notice, to the left there's an empty hi-hat stand. My new Paiste Alpha hi-hat pair is going there soon, just shipped today!

Now if you'll excuse me I'm off for some more drum practice. I always get edgy looking at the set without playing it.
