There's a Tree on the Sidewalk! NOT ot.

Postby Susan on 12 Sep 2010 04:41

There are a LOT of trees on the sidewalks in New York City and at least one neighborhood has at least a dozen new trees since 2008, thanks to the MillionTreesNYC program. Many Police fans contributed to this when they purchased tickets to the Police's final concert in 2008. I've seen questions from time to time about these trees, and indeed they're being planted! Here are a few photos from my lovely neighborhood in Sunnyside, Queens, made nicer by the additions of some LONDON PLANE trees. Thanks to STEWART, STING, and ANDY for their generosity! I speak for all my neighbors when I say we love our trees.

Cool, thanks to let us know and see it!
I love NYC, and I miss it so much; I lived for a while in the East Village and simply loved it, it was 1988.
Thanks again for this great post.

Susan, thanks for this update. What an uplifting contribution especially one day after 9-11.

This is lovely to see Susan.

These trees will hopefully be there for many generations to enjoy.

One of the shows I went to was sponsoring a water charity. I wonder how many other brilliant causes the tour helped.

Does anyone know?

It is so cool.

I love trees. Really old trees freak me out, wooden history.

One day that tree will be huge. Great idea.

Thanks, BB

nice.

....and what better than a London Plane?

the bark acts as a filter before coming off in little bits taking the crap out of the air as it does.

Thanks for your comments, guys!
Gio: you would probably not recognize your old neighborhood, it's changed a lot (and probably costs 5x as much to rent a place there too).

Another reason why we need new trees planted--old ones are being killed by these insane storms we've been getting lately. These pictures are from a local news website, photos taken about 2 hours ago (on Sept. 16). Indeed, there's a tree on the sidewalk, and there are also some trees on people's cars, railroad tracks, roads, you name it. Ridiculous storm passed through here today:

I was going to post a thread about the storms to ask how everyone is, and then I checked this one. Pretty wild, huh? I would never expect that of NY. I hope all is well. What IS going on with this weather?

Thanks, LT woman! I believe all NYC area Nutters are accounted for, though one reported "getting hammered" and they're not talking about a night out.

The new trees that I passed by last night on my way home were fine. a lot of big old trees were destroyed. Definitely not normal weather for us, even considering that it's still summer.
