Sting on "Classic Tour" ?! ... YA RLY.

Daily Mail is indeed a rather shit newspaper.

The Guardian isn't. One may disagree with it's editorial policy, but it doesn't print gossipy bullshit. http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/ ... uzbekistan

If the funds raised, and the fee, have been put to good use then that is definitely a point in the gentleman's favour. I appreciate that there are differing views on 'cultural boycotts' and therefore let's let that slide. However, how does a person think that they're performing for UNICEF if UNICEF know nothing about it? Maybe it's a muddle. Maybe there was no large fee paid for the performance. Maybe Sting did not profit at all from this. In which case, I think it might be in his best interests to issue a press release setting the record straight.

And maybe the People's Daily, which is the official news outlet of the Communist Party of China, is just as suspect a source as the Daily Mail???

Hmm. Possibly slightly less suspect than the Daily Mail - but I'm waaay left so I may be biased.

English-lion - just re-read my post: apologies if it came across as a jibe at you. Not my intention. Good to know there's international disrespect for the Daily Mail!

Pretty left leaning myself, but as a journalist I have this affinity for freedom of the press, which straight out just doesn't exist in China. The People's Daily is a government run entity, and as such espouses the party line...which in this case is relevant because they are allies with the Uzbekistan regime, so any slant they put on this cultural festival is highly suspect to my mind.

It doesn't matter to me if the proceeds for this shindig went to charity. If Sting accepted money for performing, there was nothing charitable going on from his end. Could you imagine if he had been paid for the Haiti fundraiser?
I think smudge is right. Sting and his people should be doing some major damage control now that this story has hit the reputable press. The longer they stay silent, the more I think the story is accurate. And that saddens me greatly.
