SC on RS Readers' Best Drummers List

SC on RS Readers' Best Drummers List

Postby TheEqualizer on 09 Feb 2010 03:13

This was mentioned in my thread re: Them Crooked Vultures on SNL. Anyways, the reader submitted votes for "Best Drummer" and our STEWART made top 5. Yay! Of course, my enthusiasm is muted a bit as the list does seem a bit suspect. I mean, Buddy Rich is only #14? But for the morons who read RS to even know who SC is must count for something. At least Travis Barker and the dork from The Killers didn't make the top 15.

Between Dave Grohl on Saturday Night Live and Zak Starkey filling in for the Who’s Keith Moon during the Super Bowl, drummers were in the spotlight this past weekend, so we asked our readers to tell us the greatest of all time. After counting up the votes, and there were lots of them, it comes as no surprise that Bonzo himself, Led Zeppelin’s John Bonham, was voted Number One, beating out Moon, Grohl, Rush’s Neil Peart and more. And despite a grass-roots effort to get The Muppet Show’s Animal on the list, we kept the results to drummers with a human pulse. (Check out RS‘ Greatest Singers and Greatest Guitarists stories, too):

1. John Bonham (Led Zeppelin)
2. Neil Peart (Rush)
3. Keith Moon (The Who)
4. Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Them Crooked Vultures)
5. Stewart Copeland (The Police, Oysterhead)
6. Ringo Starr (The Beatles)
7. Ginger Baker (Cream, Blind Faith)
8. Jimmy Chamberlin (Smashing Pumpkins)
9. Charlie Watts (The Rolling Stones)
10. Carter Beauford (Dave Matthews Band)
11. Mitch Mitchell (Jimi Hendrix Experience)
12. Danny Carey (Tool)
13. Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers)
14. Buddy Rich
15. Alex Van Halen (Van Halen)

By the way, BOOOOOOO for disqualifying Animal.

Also, we must find this moron and string him up by his short hairs:

Alot of those drummers are on the list because they’re in great bands not because of their skills:Copeland,Starr,Chamberl in,Watts, and Smith. Great bands, average drummers. Lars needs to be on the list.

Say what you want about Ronnie Vanucci (The Killers), but I love his sticks. Beefy, but light and extra long. Amazingly versatile.

Normally I don't pay much attention to top drummer lists from Rolling Stone or any publication for that matter. Nonetheless it's nice to see Stewart in the top five.
As for keeping the results to drummers having a human pulse...well...Bonzo hasn't had a pulse since September 25th 1980. I guess being predeceased is acceptable criteria so I'll nominate cool cat Louie Bellson to be on there, too.
As with any shortlist, there are so many glaring omissions.
No mention of Steve Smith, Omar Hakim, Steve Gadd, Tim Alexander...

At least they spelt Neal Peart's name wright.

What the hell does that mean?
