Postby giovanni on 10 Jul 2009 12:48

Hmm...let me see....Stewart was in Italy last week, Sting is in Italy now....where's Andy? Maybe next week? I doubt.

Anyway, Sting is in Italy, in Ischia, the wonderful island near Naples, for a Cinema Festival; he will partecipate at the Ischia Global Film Festival.

Ha ha, wouldn't that be funny if Andy turned up there next week?
Of course by then Sting will be back in the U.S. for his show.

Oh man! That's just sad. Didn't they tell him in advance which song they'd perform? I guess it's not as easy as your ABC's after all.
In Dallas, the only game that really mattered was in the word gamelan.

To be fair, it's not like Sting goes home and listens to his own albums in his spare time for pleasure, which is how we all have his lyrics so well memorized. I give him huge credit for getting up there and being spontaneous, train wreck and all. And I do love the comment about how surreal it is that others are teaching him his own song.

This is waaayy common for musicians. I'm not too surprised given that he only wrote 1/2 the song; it's probably not as ingrained in his soul as a result.

I thought it was kinda fun actually to see him relaxed and having a good time.
It is funny, the words are so ingrained in our heads we forget sometimes the artist may actually forget the words!

Actually, I noticed that some artists sometimes know the material by other musicians better than stuff they wrote themselves. The artist may have recorded a song 20 years ago and then never played it live. In that case, the artist may not know the song as well as a song they just grew up listening. For instance, I remember seeing Adrian Belew play a small club where he took a lot of requests. I remember it took him quite some time to remember the guitar part to "Phone Call from the Moon" but he did not even attempt any lyrics. He did not make any attempts to play King Crimson's "Two Hands." He never played either song live before. On the other hand, he could play any Beatles song requested.
