BBC unveils 2009 F1 coverage; confirms return of The Chain
Tue 24 Feb, 02:02 PM
The BBC has elaborated upon its Formula 1 plans in 2009, with news that it is to provide extensive and comprehensive coverage across all of its platforms - and that it is to re-instate Fleetwood Mac's legendary rock anthem The Chain as the sport's theme tune.
The Beeb broadcast F1 until rival ITV signed an agreement with commercial rights-holder Bernie Ecclestone in 1997, a situation that continued until the end of last season, when it was announced that the top flight would be returning to its traditional home this year after more than a decade's absence.
There will be live coverage on BBC1 of all 17 grands prix in 2009 and of every qualifying session with the exception of Brazil - which will air on BBC2 - as well as on the red button, radio, online and mobile.
Moreover, fans will be able to customise their viewing experience by way of options including split-screen action, a live leaderboard, in-car cameras, a choice of commentary, live online streaming, live text, interactive forums, circuit guides and blogs.
The presenting team will be constituted by award-winning former McLaren and Benetton star Martin Brundle and Five Live stalwart Jonathan Legard in the commentary box, with the expert studio line-up comprised of recently-retired 13-time grand prix-winner David Coulthard, colourful former team owner Eddie Jordan and erstwhile children's presenter Jake Humphrey. Ted Kravitz and Lee McKenzie will report from the pit-lane.
Even better news still for die-hard fans, though, is that Fleetwood Mac's iconic, atmospheric signature tune is also to be reprised. The Chain is back.

Does anyone know how to view the BBC iplayer on the website from the US? Apparently, tv programmes are only available within the UK. There must be a way around this. Any tech geeks out there? Thanks.

At the moment, this is the only option to see the Beeb in the US. Of course, no F1, at least until this year.

Sooo we're stuck with the Usual Suspects on Speed minus Peter Windsor (who, I heard, might have bought into a team).

Bruno Senna rumor I heard: as we have seen, it does not look like DNA helps you much once you're in the cockpit...

Not something I've done myself, but I'm told that you need to find a proxy server in the uk, so that the beeb thinks you're over here.

Dive had a recommendation a while back (third post down in the thread)

ETA: Actually I have tried it, when trying to view US stuff, but the particular provider was blocking known proxy servers, so I guess it is a bit trial and error...

Yup - on those new-fangled computer things :-) iPlayer is an on demand, over the web, BBC watching thingy. It isn't available outside the UK, and it isn't available for all of their output. But it might have F1 live.

Personally I don't see the attraction of watching what my mom refers to as 'the noisies', but each to their own - I'll try not to think about what percentage of my TV licence fee got blown on the F1 contract :-)

I absolutely hate that US and UK shit isnt cross compatible. I am really considering buying a region 2 dvd player. and also getting my comp worked so that I can watch all the british stuff I want.

S'laps - in the UK most DVD players can be hacked to go multi-region. Some perfectly reputable retailers here 'pre-hack' them to save customers the bother of doing it themselves. Essentially you just type in a code via the remote. Technically it invalidates the warranty, but if you have a player already that isn't in warranty anyway, might be worth a shot. Google the make and model and you should find the necessary info. As I understand it there is nothing in the hard-wiring of these gizmos that makes them region specific - it is just a software tweak.

(But honestly - Top Gear?!? See my earlier remarks ref. F1 about what my TV licence fee funds :-) )

ETA: Again - just from a UK hardware perspective, the NTSC/PAL problem goes away with DVD.
