OT - White Stripes play final Conan tonite (Feb. 20)

Postby TheEqualizer on 20 Feb 2009 18:23

Friday, February 20 is the last Late Night with Conan O'Brien. Conan is moving on to take over the Tonight Show from Jay Leno.

Anywho, his music guest closing the show will be the White Stripes. This will be the first live performance by the White Stripes since they canceled their tour in September 2007.

The White Stripes have had quite a relationship with Conan. Back in 2003, the White Stripes were the music guest for an entire week. In 2005, Conan appeared in their video for The Denial Twist. Later, Conan had them play two songs on a single show (pretty rare for Conan).

In a bit of additional Conan trivia, the musical guest for Conan's first show - Radiohead. They played "Creep."

Wish I liked the White Stripes.

I still badly miss the days when Letterman would have Warren Zevon on for a week at a time...*sigh*...

Warren's last appearance on Letterman was heartbreaking. Unforgettable.

I still miss Warren :(
Still hard to listen to his music.
I am glad I got to see him once live, didn't matter that I think he must have been drinking since he forgot the words to Werewolves...

I saw him, I think about 4 times? He used to play the TLA in Philly a lot. I have a ton of memories of those shows, they were the best.

I still go through phases where I listen to nothing BUT his music for a while, but then I can't listen to it at all for a good long time after that. The bio on him was pretty hard to read, too. But he still means the world to me for his music.

Anyway, complete tangent to the original thread...

I'm also a Zevon fan. Remember doing a lot of walking to and from the bus stop listening to "Sentimental Hygiene," which has Pete Buck and the other REMmers on it, quite a bit the year it came out.

Bummer: One of our state legislators from Memphis was buddies with him, and he's kind of a jerk. Here's hoping he isn't so much in his personal life.

Stripes: Mr. D is currently addicted to an Xbox game (Star Wars: Force Unleashed) to the point I haven't gotten to watch TV in weeks, nearly... I'm hoping this shows up on YouTube later. Thought the Stripes had broken up, am kinda happy to see they may still be a going concern. I understand both Meg and Jack are living in my humble burg these days, but I haven't heard any rumors on the subject recently.

I'm happy to see them back, too...

The band played a bit of Demo Man right before Andy Richter came on stage $

I love Hindu Love Gods cover of Raspberry Beret.
Lawyers Guns & Money is one of my favorite all time songs.
Ever read Basket Case by Carl Hiaasen? He was friends with Warren and the book is about the mysterious death of a rock star from an 80's hair band. I think he dedicated the book to him and at the end Warren wrote lyrics for the song called Basket Case.

What was this thread about anyway :?

Gawd, IMHO the White Stripes performance sucked. Meg played guitar.

So here were the guests for the final show:

John Mayer (by video playing "LA will eat you alive")
Wil Farrel (as George W Bush and a stripping leprochaun)
Abe Vigoda (in a skit)
Andy Richter
White Stripes

Of note, when Andy Richter came out, Max Weinberg's band played "Demolition Man."

I hope Fallon doesn't suck

I was trying not to read too much but Meg looked like whatever meds she might be on for anxiety need to be tuned down just a bit and Jack looked like he was about to break into tears at a few points.

It's one of Conan's fave songs and so it wasn't a surprise, and there's only limited ways it can be done but there was something downright funerary about it, I just dunno...Not quite the re-union for the White Stripes nor the send-off for Conan's Late Night that I was expecting given the occasion...

On a tangent, if Letterman were to quit in the near future, it would not surprise me if he had The Foos plays Everlong on his last show.
