SC interview: You Only Make Money When You Sweat

I thought it was worth a mention that after reading this article I went home that night and while listening to NPR, they had a discussion on this very topic. I can't remember who was doing the reporting, but he said exactly what Stewart said, in the old days it was the live show that was an advertisement for the record/cd and now it's the record/cd/mp3 that is the advertisement for the live show. Oh, I remember now. The report was about Live Nation and Ticketmaster merging. shudder.

Hopefully the emphasis on live shows over CDs will reduce the number of manufactured artists and pretty faces that are over produced to hide their musical deficiencies, leaving the actual talent to rise to the top again.

Here is what I think will be interesting to watch. If those two companies merge and monopolize, and continue to SUCK, I wonder if we'll see an emergence of more companies like STUBHUB and the like. Aftermarket. Grassroots. Just a thought -- you economist types can all school me now.

And, DD, I love that this change in the business gets rid of the chaff. I just hope that the talented have the drive and patience to stick it out.

Word! Listening to the Gene Krupa series got me thinking about this. It was all about the live performance back in those days. Touring and playing music was how they earned their bread and butter. The whole record industry thing is a rather recent phenomena. We are moving back to a day when professional musicians play music for a living. From a music point of view that is a very good thing.
My only worry is that the musicians won't profit from their work nearly as much as the VileBastard hybrid with its myriad of service charges and convenience fees.

Enjoyed the interview....however personally speaking I think Live Nation as a company (and how they fleeced fans of $100 a year for sod all return) was a complete joke.

Why pay Live Nation for "Priority seat booking" when there are better seats allocated on the actual day of sale from Ticketmaster for no extra charge.....

Unfortunately U2 have gone down the "Live Nation" route too so wait until you see the flack from their fans on their next tour.

Just a thought about what SC said re: younger fans appreciating their elders, vs. back in his day: Just why, then, is he currently narrating a five-part special about a drummer from his own parents' generation?!

You guys know LiveNation and Ultrastar both have strong ties to Clear Channel, right? This merger goes through, and one group of interests will own all the radio and distribution channels; the live-promotion business; and will control ticket sales. I simply can't believe this isn't illegal.
