Well, its hard reallly to say but I would go with at least the following:
American Graffitti Soundtrack (covers most of the 50s tunes)
Chuck Berry - The Great 28
Beatles - #1s
Elton John - any Greatest Hits, really
Billy Joel - same as above
Zeppelin - Mothership
Stones - 24 Licks or Hot Rocks or whatever it's called
Any Motown act you like, Tempations, 4 Tops, Supremes - Greatest Hits
Stevie Wonder - Original Musiquarium
George Harrison - Best of Dark Horse
Paul McCartney - So MANY to choose, I'd say All The Best or Paul Is Live
Fleetwood Mac - Greatest Hits or The Dance
Journey - Greatest Hits
The Billboard #1s are good CDs for the years in the 80s or early 90s
Police - Boxed Set, Ghost or Synchro
Eric Clapton - Unplugged - since its a kid
Indigo Girls - I like Back on the Bus
Elvis - Live on Stage (recorded in Memphis '73) or Aloha From Hawaii
James Taylor - Greatest Hits
Sweet Sarah Mc - Afterglow Live or Mirrorball
Bob Marley - Any good Greatest Hits will do
You could always add : Count Basie, Miles, Sinatra, Connick Jr., Sammy Davis Jr.
That's a start off the top of my head:
I'm not too much into the newer stuff....and I don't really get into country
