DUBXANNE - THE POLICE DUB TRIBUTE |
May 28 , 2008 |
|
THE POLICE IN DUB is a tribute to the sound of The Police and will be released on May, 30th 2008 on Ecobeach Records.
In the late seventies, THE POLICE were the biggest band in Britain; by the early eighties they ruled the globe as a three-headed, bleached-blond monster of rock (or to be more precise… they pioneered an evolutionary shift in rock – sensitive and articulate, in touch with the feminine side, the new model band with a new man as a singer.)
Surfing a new wave sound which valued intellectual cool and lightly sprinkled ethnic influences over the discredited rock’n’roll bluster of old. The first post-punk supergroup. A constructive arrogance and a very lucky streak…!!!
At the end of 1977, over the Christmas period, Stewart Copeland played Sting some of his reggae records. When Summers returned to Britain from his vacation in America, he found his band mates newly inspired by Jamaican sounds.
“There’s is this terrible wrong-headed cliché that The Police were a white reggae band,” protests Summers. “We weren’t at all. A white reggae band would be UB40.
The Police was The Police. We took elements out of reggae, principally the bassline and tempo, and used them creatively… and that was the point of departure.” Indeed it was. Reggae rhythms finally shook The Police free from post-punk rock convention. They loosened up, lightened up, opened up. They were ready for take off. The rest of this story has become history – to date, 40 million people all over the world have bought a Police record…!
23 years later … and everybody knows what’s going on with The Police: they’ve reformed and went back out on tour. Another key event – also 23 years later - is the release of a project which has been simmering for quite some time now: The Police in Dub. Due for release in 2008 on ECHO BEACH. The first recordings for the Police In Dub sessions by DubXanne (backed by Okada) started in September 2006. After exhaustive scrutiny of the Police back catalogue at EMI Music Publishing (which controls and manages the rights for Sting’s songs) and lengthy negotiations with Sting’s management team, final consent for the project was granted in March 2008. Now the world can sit back and look forward to dub versions of the biggest tunes by The Police :
Walking on the dub; Roxanne – Dubxanne, Can’t stand loosing you – Can’t stand loosing dub; Bring on the night – Bring on the dub, The Bed’s Too Big Without you – The Bed’s To Big Without Dub as well as many others. DubXanne´s album is a mastpiece between Dub Reggae with massive Roots Influence but also with crossover potential to a jazzy, elctronical dancy vibe and huge Vocalists on top:
From the legendary Big Youth (vocals on So Lonely) over to one of Stings best friends from the early The Beat days… Ranking Roger from The Beat. From the most poppy vocalist ever Earl 16 (massive on Leftfield and Dreadzone albums…!) to the number one Dub poet Benjamin Zephaniah and back to EASED from the legendary German dancehall reggae act SEEED…!!! and last but not least … JAZZ Min.. the fairy tale vocals on Wrapped Around Your Fingers and the DubXanne´s I Trees… (backroundsingers from Gentleman
A couple of special notes about Okada…. they backed ZOE, Maxim, Don Abi and they come along in the following line up: Mykal - Drums / Marcus - Bass / Manougazou – Guitar, and on Keyboards Guido Craveiro who also produced PID but was also responsible for productions with Moloko and Bootsy Collins and ZOE. |

STEWART COPELAND at the SAVANNAH FESTIVAL
by Conroy Jett; pics by Jean Carter Wilson
The ground shook in Savannah, Georgia on March 26, 2008. The epicenter was the Trustees Theater, the location of "An Evening with Stewart Copeland," a program that was part of the 2008 Savannah Music Festival. It featured the first U.S. performance in several years of orchestral pieces composed by Police drummer and founder Stewart Copeland, who was taking a brief break from the recent Police reunion tour to conduct and perform with a 16-piece orchestra. Several of the pieces had not been performed in the U.S until that evening and included a world premiere piece named after Copeland's youngest daughter, Celeste. The music was followed by a Q&A and a screening of Copeland's film Everyone Stares. >>>>CONTINUE... |

SAVANNAH FESTIVAL: Stewart Copeland interviewed by Jim Reed for CONNECT SAVANNAH |
March 25, 2008 |
|
Police drummer Stewart Copeland to debut a new composition, screen a film and take questions at the SMF.
When the Savannah Music Festival announced that The Police’s drummer Stewart Copeland was among the internationally-known musicians slated to appear at their 2008 event, it was widely perceived as a major booking. However, most folks know Copeland solely for his work with the aforementioned rock group that at one time was arguably the most famous and successful power trio in the world, and not for his other accomplishments, many of which seem more suited to this engagement.
Despite the fact that he and bandmates Sting and Andy Summers reunited last year for an ongoing (and massively successful) tour marking the 30th anniversary of the release of their groundbreaking debut single “Roxanne,” there’s always been more to this U.S. born renaissance man.... |

this is what the New York Times wrote about
her:
"Hoop is a striking, dark haired songwriter

from an imaginary country, and she sings
in the accented English of someone from that
country" - The New York Times
