My husband and I and two freinds [sic] are leaving this weekend for a two-week bicycling adventure! We are driving to Pierre SD, from whence we will start cycling east along the Lewis & Clark Trail. Lewis & Clark were the intrepid leaders of the Corps of Discovery that explored west from St. Louis to the mouth of the Columbia River, looking for a cross-continental water route, in 1804-1806. Our ride will cover the first one-third of the area they covered. Our journey will end in St. Charles MO, for a total possible cycling distance of 987 miles over 11 days of riding. That's an average of almost 90 miles per day.
One thing I would like to come out of this adventure is awareness and funding for the Melanoma International Foundation. I am keeping a blog of the journey at

and here's what I say in the "riding for charity" post:

Along with his brothers Stewart (best known as the drummer in The Police) and Miles (who, among other things, managed The Police and founded IRS Records), Ian brought music into being that changed my life and thrilled me starting in the late 1970s. Their work continues to thrill and excite me to this day. Ian died from melanoma in 2006. My request for your support is a testimony to the value the Copeland family has brought to my life, and the joy I experience daily through listening to and playing the music that they have created."

wow, that is really touching and awesome of you Lynne. I wish you all a safe journey and will be thinking of you along the way, reading about your adventures as they happen. To tie this bike ride into Melanoma awareness is a great thing. 
Drink lots of water...(camelpacks) and remember the sunscreen and hats and sunglasses of course.
Think that I am gonna start riding a bike to get to and from work from now on. Gas prices SSUUCCKK. I can get a camelpack, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and a bike for what I put in my tank in one week. UGH!!!
Drink lots of water...(camelpacks) and remember the sunscreen and hats and sunglasses of course.

Yeah baby! Spend less on gas, get in shape ... and don't forget a helmet! I don't know how to wear a brimmed hat and a helmet at the same time ... but for sure you'll want a physical block sunscreen (titanium dioxide and/or zinc oxide), although the best protection is clothing layers and a brimmed hat.

the destination and route could have been a description round the lake of tranquility 'cos i haven't got a blue clue where you mean. (where's google earth?)..... BUT i wish you luck, good judgement and tight lines......... way to go.... and you never know WHO might read about your trip!

Oh Lynne I agree. Save money on Gas and Get in shape. I actually will mostly be riding when there is no sun. Good thing for me. I do have an spf50 sunscreen by baby faces that I use when I do go out in the sun. I mostly prefer to cover up if I can. I definitely need to get me a brimmed hat for outside though.
